Making Dig VR, Part One: Origins

Every game has a story, and this one is close to our hearts at Wired Productions. Introducing the making of Dig VR, Part One: Origins – the story of the birth and journey of Dig VR.

The Story

In 2020, as COVID swept across Europe, the UK entered its first official lockdown. Wired Productions MD, Leo Zullo, was visiting his family farm in Italy and caring for his father, who had fallen ill. With lockdown happening, Leo faced a choice: return to the UK or stay by his father’s side. Leo chose to stay in the house his father had built and remain in Italy with his father.

As weeks passed in solitude, Leo found himself wanting to work the land, to connect with the home his father had dreamed of. But when his attempts to knock down a 50-meter wall with a tractor didn’t go quite as planned, he rented a digger and got to work, his father watching and laughing from the sidelines, occasionally calling out, “What are you doing, boy!?” For Leo’s dad, these moments rekindled his spirit.

Then something clicked: as Leo maneuvered the digger, he realized that the controls mirrored the handsets used in VR. Controlling the arm and bucket felt just like VR motion controls, and in that moment, the idea for DIG VR was born.

The Journey

Inspired, Leo’s company, Wired Productions, partnered with the talented developers at Just Add Water to make DIG VR a reality. The result? An immersive, hands-on VR experience capturing the thrill and precision of operating a digger. Starting with nothing but a mini-digger and a big dream, players in DIG VR take on challenging tasks with ever-larger machines and diverse attachments to tackle the toughest jobs. DIG VR invites players to dig, dredge, and delve deep into the art of excavation, discovering along the way the joy—and frustrations—of working on a digger, whether they’re total novices or seasoned pros.
