Bringing you bleeding edge visuals (circa 1998) Retro mode brings the same combat, the same oppressive deep sea horror, but reborn in glorious low resolution. Retro mode combines some adjusted visual presentation and filter techniques to bring back the ‘sat in front of the tv cross legged at midnight’ nostalgia, and if we do say so ourselves… really adds a distinct charm to our nightmare filled research stations and…IT IS COMPLETLY FREE!

What is Beneath?
Beneath is a deep-sea, story-driven horror FPS where you play as Noah Quinn, a diver trapped in collapsing underwater research stations while an ancient, Lovecraft-style evil tears reality apart. It’s built as an old-school, single-player experience: no online, no microtransactions, just tense shooting, sanity-breaking horror, and a 10+ hour campaign, created by two brothers chasing the game they wished they’d had back in college.
Combat is tactical, not run-and-gun: ammo is scarce, enemies are aggressive, and you’re constantly weighing every bullet, every reload, every peek around a corner. A sanity system twists your perception as you witness more horrors, making gunfights more unstable and pushing that feeling that you’re one bad encounter away from losing it completely.
Instead of another open-world live service, Beneath is a focused, offline horror shooter that proudly leans into indie constraints and old-school pacing. It wears its inspirations on its sleeve, fear of the deep ocean, classic corridor shooters, sanity mechanics, but filters them through two bros’ weird, specific vision of “FEAR and Dead Space, but crushed under the ocean.”
